Febrauary 28th is celebrated as National Science Day in India to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by the great Indian scientist Nobel laurate Sir.C.V.Raman.

The Centre for Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has been celebrating this special day every year since 1987, and did so this year at the varsity campus.

As a part of this celebration, scientific competitions and popular lectures were organized to sensitize the importance of scientific contributions to the participants, which included students from various schools and colleges.

The contributions of great scientists such as Sir.C.V.Raman, Bharat Ratna awardee and father of India’s Green Revolution M.S.Swaminathan were briefed to the students by G.Hemaprabha, Director, ICAR- Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore while she delivered her presidential address.

N.Senthil (Director, CPMB &B and Dean, SPGS), Ramasamy Perumal, Professor, Kansas State University, USA, E.Kokiladevi, Professor and Head, Department of Plant Biotechnology addressed the gathering.

As a part of the celebration, various competitions were held for the students, and many of them presented their innovative ideas through scientific exhibits. The winners of various competitions were awarded with prizes.
