TN Home Secretary releases 3 lakh Uyir Kutty Cops Road Safety Curriculum Students Workbooks and faculty guides in Coimbatore

'Uyir Kutty Cops' program is developed by UYIR, a Coimbatore-based NGO working in the field of Road Safety. This special educational program strives to illuminate young school children in the district about road safety through a well-framed & formulated curriculum and make these kids the messengers of road safety, and it was launched by Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin in Oct, 2022.
On Friday (13.10.2023), the Uyir Kutty Cops Road Safety Curriculum's Students Workbook and Faculty Guide Release Function was held at the Corporation Kalai Arangam in R.S.Puram, and P.Amudha IAS, Principal Secretary of Home, Prohibition and Excise Department, Govt of Tamil Nadu took part in the function as the Chief Guest and released the Students Workbook and Faculty Guide for
'Uyir Kutty Cops' Road Safety Curriculum.
3 lakh students workbooks and faculty guides were released in the presence of the Guests of Honor Kranthi Kumar Pati IAS, District Collector, Coimbatore, Bhavaneeswari, IGP, West Zone, Balakrishnan, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City were the Guests of Honour.
M.Prathap, Commissioner, Coimbatore Corporation, Saravana Sundar, Dy.IGP, Coimbatore Range, Sivakumaran, Joint Transport Commissioner, Coimbatore Region, Badrinarayanan, Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore District.Uyir's Managing Trustee Dr.Rajasekaran, Trustees, Vijay Mohan and S.Malarvizhi, S.V.Balasubramaniam, Ravi Sam graced the occasion with their presence.
Welcoming the gathering, S.V.Balasubramaniam said that Uyir was started in 2018 with the aim to make roads of Coimbatore safe for everyone, and on that note Rs. 4.5. Crore have been spent to install numerous CCTV cameras in the traffic junctions in Coimbatore to assist the police identify road-rules violators, and make riders adhere to rules.
Dr.Rajasekaran in his address referred to a statistics and said that India has the highest number of Road Traffic Accidents in the world, we have the highest rate of accidents for every 10,000 vehicles and we have the highest fatalities for every 1000 road accidents.
"If everybody is safe on the roads then roads will be safe for everybody, and it is on this basis that Uyir was created as people's movement."
Balakrishnan IPS in his address said that Coimbatore city had 199 road accident-deaths till 30th Sept 2022, and the number has reduced by 10% to 184 in the same period this year. Similarly the non fatality cases which stood at 629 in 2022 has come down to 579.
He said while there is a decrease there is much to do about it. He expressed that kids will play a significant role in helping reducing that when teachers teach them about this in the classrooms.
District Collector Kranthi Kumar in his address said the program's outreach went to 1.6 lakh students in 460 schools of Coimbatore, and this has resulted in an improvement in the helmet compliance in District this year.
This is why this program is being extended to greater number of school students in the district, he said.
Speaking at the event, Home Secretary P.Amudha IAS said out of the total accidents happening in Coimbatore, 90% is due to the driver's fault. Similarly in fatal accidents, nearly 85% is due to the driver's fault.
This is why programs such as Uyir Kutty Cops are needed to educate kids who inturn will educate their parents.
"Kids learn from what we practice and not what we preach them," she said, and wanted all the stakeholders of the program to follow what they preach.
Accidents happen due to multiple reasons including poor condition of the roads, and it is the duty of the highways and other concerned departments to fix that. On the other hand, it is the duty of the riders and pillion riders to maintain discipline on the roads, maintain their vehicles periodically and travel at a safe pace.
She said self inflicted accidents are more, and drivers are at fault mostly. She expressed her hope that through this initiative a better change will dawn.
She appreciated the Trustees of Uyir for taking up this initiative, and urged the teachers to groom kids about road safety and also be better models of what they preach.
