The India Railways is celebrating its 170th Anniversary today.

John Elphinstone, the then governor of Mumbai, inaugurated rail services for the first time in the country by waving the green flag from Bori Bunder railway station on this day in 1853.

The India Railways has come a long way since then in terms of modernization and connectivity.

By 1880, which is 27 years since the first train, India had established a 9,000 km railway network, and started connecting a few parts of the country.

Fast forward to today we have over 108,000 km of running lines, connectivity every part of the country, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

Back then we had steam-powered train, diesel powered trains, followed by Electricity powered engines.

Now the Indian Railways is set to roll out the country's first hydrogen-powered train by December 2023.

The Indian Railways has come a long way, and it looks to make history this year, by launching India's first-ever bullet train.

Yes, as per reports this hyper speed train will run between Mumbai to Ahmedabad, soon. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2023, as per reports.

What makes it much more amazing is that reports state that this Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Train will pass underwater in Thane!!!

By the way, did you know which was the first train to go steaming ahead in South India?

According to The Hindu, "the Royapuram Railway Station sent the first train of southern India chugging out, on June 28, 1856."

"The first passenger train carried the Governor of Madras Presidency, Lord Harris and 300 European delegates."
