Be that 1% that donates blood!

In India, we have a population of 130 crores. We just need 1% of the population, that is 1.3 crore, to donate blood to meet the requirement in our country, but we haven't seen that happen because every year, we have a deficit of 20-30 lakhs, said Dr. Sridhar Gopal, Consultant Haemato - Oncologist & Stem Cell Transplant Physician at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital (SRH) while taking part in its World Blood Donor Day Celebration.

As a part of observing this day, SRH, Coimbatore organized a Blood Donation Camp on Tuesday. The Camp was inaugurated by Ram Kumar, CEO, SNR Sons Charitable Trust & Dr.P.Sukumaran, Dean, SRH. More than 40 members of Sri Ramakrishna Dental College & Hospital (SRDCH) including the staff & students, donated blood.

It was conveyed that this camp was also made available for members of Sri Ramakrishna Educational Institutions to take part and donate blood. Medical team from SRH looked after the donation. The donors were provided certificates for their valuable contribution.

At the event, Dr. Sridhar Gopal further conveyed that apart from road-accident victims, cancer patients, dengue patients, patients with Thalassemia, blood cancer and those with blood related diseases would need blood transfusion at various occasions, hence we need more people to volunteer.

He said efforts are being taken by hospitals like SRH to create awareness about Blood Donation and clear the questions and myths about blood donations, like thinking that donating blood may cause fatigue and pain. Some even worry that higher unit of blood may be taken from them, etc.

He added that by donating blood, one can reproduce new blood in his body. Regular donation can help in reducing risk of cardiac related events and some cancer risks.
