"A single healthy individual can save up to 8 lives after his/her death by donating his organs. Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Coimbatore is actively promoting this cause through its voluntary Online Organ Donation Drive campaign, called 'Gift Organs, Give Life,' and it aims to register over 1 lakh voluntary organ donors within 3 months," said R.Sundar, Managing Trustee, SNR Sons Charitable Trust, here on Wednesday.
This campaign is held in partnership with the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) and the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). Under this campaign, the hospital organized an Organ Donation Awareness Walkathon at Race Course, Coimbatore on Wednesday.
It was flagged off by A. Saravana Sundar IPS, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City along with R.Sundar. More than 300 students and NSS volunteers belonging to Sri Ramakrishna Educational Institutions participated and performed various organ-donation awareness activities.
Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar stated that the importance of organ donation is growing significantly today. While society previously focused on food donation and eye donation, equal attention is now being directed toward organ donation. He added that the Coimbatore City Police will continue to support organ donation initiatives by facilitating green corridors for the seamless transportation of donated organs.
The commissioner commended Sri Ramakrishna Hospital for its visionary efforts in raising mass awareness about organ donation and wished them success in their endeavor to register 1 lakh donors.
R.Sundar recalled a similar campaign conducted in Coimbatore in 2016, which saw 13,206 individuals register as organ donors. That campaign was an attempt at a world record, and a similar effort will be made this year.
He further said that anyone in India can register as a donor by scanning the dedicated QR code or by visiting the designated website and providing the required details. This initiative has received positive feedback from the public, and many corporates have also expressed their appreciation, according to R. Sundar.
Doctors and Executives of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital and Principals & Professors from Sri Ramakrishna Educational Institutions, R.Annadurai, NSS Program Coordinator, Bharathiar University, joined the occasion.
