The circulation of ₹ 2000 notes among the people has become very low in recent times, hence printing of this denomination is kept asleep since 2019.
According to RBI's Annual Report for 2021-22 released on Friday, the value of the total ₹ 2000 notes in circulation has dropped to 13.8% of the total compared with 17.3 % a year ago, Livemint said.
As of March 2022, the total number of currency notes of all denominations stood at 13,053 crore. In that only 214 crore notes are
₹ 2000 notes. ₹500 notes hold the highest share in terms of circulation followed by ₹ 10 notes. According to the report, the number of ₹ 500 denomination notes in circulation rose to 4,554.68 crore at the end of March this year as against 3,867.90 crore in the year-ago period.
Seeing ₹ 2000 notes is getting rarer. "A perception gaining ground among citizens is that the notes are fuelling the black economy and have been hoarded by crooks and racketeers" Frontline mentioned.
