Preparation of Regional Plan for Coimbatore Regional Planning Area (RPA) which comprises of Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruppur District, measuring 15,679 sq.km. is underway.

According to the Directorate of Town and Country Planning (DTCP), the primary goal behind regional planning is to bring about the improvement of a region in a planned and systematic fashion.

It is a proactive approach that aims to plan a sustainable future for regions by considering various aspects such as the natural environment, land use, and natural resources. It also takes into account, the limits of both material and human information in that region and suggests techniques for its development.

The School of Architecture and Planning, Bopal which was appointed as the consultant in 2021 to prepare the regional plan for Coimbatore RPA is also preparing the Regional Plan for The Nilgiris district, measuring 2,565 sq.km.

Government of Tamil Nadu sanctioned Rs. 2.75+ crore for the preparation of this plans for Coimbatore and The Nilgiris RPAs.

As per the rules for Regional Plan (Preparation, Publication and Sanction) Rules 2021, a land and building use map for the regional planning area should be prepared by the Regional Planning Authority within 18 months from the date of the authority’s constitution.  Following that, within a period of 24 months from the date of preparation of the land and building use map, the RP Authority should prepare a draft regional plan for the RPA.

Sources mentioned that this report is getting prepared keeping in mind of Coimbatore Regional Planning Area’s requirements in 2042, just like Coimbatore’s Master Plan. But while the latter will be finalized in early 2025, the details regarding the former's expected time of completion is yet to be revealed.
