The Tamil Nadu government made it mandatory for all tourist vehicles registered in other states and operating in Tamil Nadu to re-register with the local Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). The deadline for re-registering the vehicles was extended multiple times, with June 18 set as the final deadline.

The transport authorities in the state began impounding omnibuses that failed to comply with the recent order across Tamil Nadu. However, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court directed the Tamil Nadu government authorities to allow All India Tourist Permit (AITP) vehicles to pass through the state without any obstruction.

According to sources, the transport authorities detained an omnibus registered in another state in Coimbatore on Thursday. The bus which is registered in Andhra Pradesh, was en route from Chennai to Ernakulam in Kerala, halted at Coimbatore's Thiruvalluvar Bus Stand this morning. The State Transport Department authorities were alerted about the bus and arrived immediately to conduct an inspection.

The bus was eventually seized. Since, more than 20 passengers were in the bus during the inspection, alternative arrangements are being made by the bus operator to help the passengers resume their travel.

Authorities in Coimbatore stated that permission is granted to bus operators from other states only for passing through Tamil Nadu, not for picking up passengers within the state. Action was taken against the bus operator today in Coimbatore in this regard.
