While Jigarthanda Double X directed by Karthik Subburaj is billed as a 'Pandya Western' movie, it is certainly an evolution of its previous installment Jigarthanda, and a comeback for the promising director Karthik Subburaj and actor Raghava Lawrence.

Set in the 1970s, Caesar (Lawrence) is a feared gangster and a rich businessman in Madurai with a tribal background. He is one of the strong pillars of support to a powerful politician named Kaarmegam (Ilavarasu).

Jeyakodi (Shine Tom Chacko) who is a celebrated movie star has aspirations to be the next CM of Tamil Nadu and wants to bring down Kaarmegam who is his rival in this race, and so he plans with his brother DSP Rathna Kumar (Naveen Chandra) to use a disgruntled Police aspirant Kirubakaran (SJ Suryah) to kill Caesar so that Karmegam will lose his power.

With this plan in motion, the aimless gangster Caesar is suddenly forced to take up a mission to help his kinsmen from the tribal community, and for that he has to face serious backlash.

How Kirubai creates this scenario and achieves his ultimate objective while how Caesar wins in his quest to help his kinsmen forms the rest of the story.

Jigarthanda Double is certainly multi-layered and much of it takes place in the second-half of the movie. While the first half takes plenty of liberty with the patience of audience to establish the base for the narrative, that action is justified by what the second half offers.

Much of the plot in second half is jam packed, maybe a little audacious and yet there is clarity and spirit in the chaos of this picture that Karthik Subburaj has colorfully painted.

Double X is a gangster flick with strong political allusions and a message that is placed before the audienc and the people in power.

Karthick Subburaj has used both Lawrence and Suryah to convey what he aimed in a way he thinks will delight the audience. It works thanks to the second half.

Music by Santhosh Narayanan has some old vibes of Jigarthanda and some new tunes. None of the song may take a hold in your heart but the background score is a support to the flick, nonetheless.

While Jigarthanda Double X was called just as a Spiritual Successor to Jigarthanda, if you wait for final credits, you will reconsider that suggestion.

Overall this is an enjoyable flick and definitely a comeback for Karthik Subburaj.
