Coimbatore District Administration is in plans to submit the new master plan for Coimbatore City to Tamil Nadu Government very soon as it about to finish considering the 3500 suggestions from the public regarding the plans stated in the draft version of the master plan.
While the District Administration had submitted the draft version of the Master Plan in Oct 2023, this time the copy that it submits to the State Government is expected to be made as the final one for the city in early 2025.
A new Master Plan of Coimbatore is very essential for the planned-growth of the city. It should be revised once in 5 years but it remained unrevised for more than 25 years ago. Hence, Coimbatore's Industry and Trade Association stressed the District Administration to revise the plan in order provide posterity and the industry the amenities and infra they would need and the preparatory works for revising the plan began few years ago. The plan includes vision for 61 village panchayats, 20+ municipalities and Coimbatore Corporation. It covers 1531.53+ sq.kms.
Keeping in mind of the future needs of Coimbatore city and the requirements of the population here in 2041, works to revise the Master Plan for Coimbatore began several years ago. It picked up pace in 2022-23, and a draft version of it was submitted to Tamil Nadu Government in October last year.
Following that, Tamil Nadu's then Sports Minister and the current Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin released an official website called as Citizen Engagement Portal (https://coimbatorelpa.com/) for viewing the draft version of the Master Plan for Coimbatore Local Planning Area on Feb 11, 2024.
The portal enabled people to view the Coimbatore Master Plan reports and download the GO, Master Plan, Land use Maps and Land use Schedule documents, and most importantly gave them the chance to share about the things they object and also add their suggestions through this dedicated site.
Totally 3500 suggestions were sent by industry bodies, construction sector association, farmers etc. Coimbatore’s Town and Country Planning Department started going through these suggestions/recommendations and objections. So far, 3100 suggestions have been considered. 2 weeks’ time has been given to the Department to finish going through the remaining 400 suggestions. Once the work is done, the master plan will be resubmitted to Tamil Nadu Government, and the State will announce the release of the Final Copy of the Master Plan for Coimbatore City later.
It is expected that the new master plan will come into effect in Jan 2025.
