Sources shared on Monday that the Muthamizh Arignar Kalaignar Grand Library and Science Centre in Coimbatore is most likely to be established in Gandhipuram area.

The library project was first announced on February this year in the TN Assembly during the release of State Budget. The Chief Minister himself said that the library would be built quickly and it will be opened in January 2026. Hence, 2 locations in the city were identified for the project; a 6-acre site in Race Course and a 7-acre site in Gandhipuram.  Both were taken to the government's notice.

A report states that the 7-acre site (belonging to Coimbatore Central Prison) near the ongoing Semmozhi Poonga project is being pitched as viable place for the mega library project and the same has been proposed to the government. An official announcement on selection of the site is expected soon.

The land acquisition works will be handled by the District Administration and the Library will be constructed by Public Works Department.

The Maintenance of the grand library, upon completion is expected to be handled by Coimbatore City Corporation.
