Several influential industry bodies in Coimbatore such as Kongu Global Forum, Southern India Engineering Manufacturer’s Association, Coimbatore District Small Industries Association, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a few others have appealed Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to take steps to quickly execute the Coimbatore Eastern Bypass road project which holds significant benefits to not just Coimbatore but the whole of Western Tamil Nadu. 

In their letter to the Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the associations stated that National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) clubbed two major road projects - Coimbatore Eastern bypass Road and Coimbatore to Karur Expressway in 2016 and prepared a feasibility study report in 2018. They underlined that this project must be approved by the Executive Committee, NHAI Head quarters, New Delhi but it is pending for more than 4 years. Hence the associations requested the Minister to delink the Coimbatore Eastern bypass road and approve this project in phase one that will contribute to the growth of Coimbatore.

Coimbatore Eastern bypass road proposed for a distance of 81 kms from Narasimhanaickenpalayam to Kaniyur and further till Madukkarai will link all the six major National Highways in Coimbatore (Mettupalayam road  -NH181, Sathyamangalam road -NH948, Avinashi road - NH544, Trichy road -NH81, Pollachi road -NH83 and Palakkad road -NH544.

“The land use pattern along the Eastern bypass road will change completely as it will provide a big opportunity to new high rise buildings for software parks, Residental Areas and Shopping malls. The new Industrial zones, Foundry clusters and Textile units will benefit along this new greenfield Bypass road,” they said in their letter to the minister.

In phase two, the Karur and Coimbatore Green Field highway which is planned to be built for 120 kms could help the people reach the destinations in one to one-and-a-half hours when the greenfield road is developed as planned. 

Further, the proposed alignment of this highway are in between the dry lands in the three districts which will be used to establish the big industrial estates that will compliment the growth of MSME in this region.

The associations expressed that this critical infrastructure project is very essential for the development of Western Tamilnadu region and requested the minister to take necessary steps to implement this project immediately in two phases.
