An eight-month-old baby (male) has been detected with the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus in Bengaluru, according to reports. This makes it the first case in India amid a surge in such cases in China.

A report mentions that the child does not have any travel history. The case was confirmed by the Karnataka Health Department. The case was reportedly conveyed to the Union Health Ministry. According to News 18, it was not clear whether this was the same strain of HMPV causing a spike in China.

ICMR confirmed that another 3-month-old baby (female) in Bengaluru had caught this infection. This baby too had no travel history, and it was treated and discharged. According to the Union Government both babies are doing okay. While there is no significant impact of HMPV in India, the government emphasized that it is fully prepared to handle any scenario, and is ready to implement restrictions when needed.

Sources state that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that causes illnesses ranging from mild colds to severe lung infections such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Though less recognised than the flu or Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), HMPV is a significant cause of respiratory illnesses worldwide, particularly during winter and spring.  The virus poses a significant risk, particularly to vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. This virus can cause significant difficulties for them, so raising awareness and taking preventive steps is important.
