G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital (GKNMH) was recently awarded the prestigious LEED v4.1 Operations + Maintenance (O+M) Platinum certification by GBCI India, the nation’s foremost authority on sustainability in building design, construction, and operations.

This makes it the first project in the Indian healthcare sector to receive Platinum Certification, the highest level of certification offered in this domain. GBCI India is part of the U.S. Green Building Council (‘USGBC’) that provides independent oversight of professional credentialing and project certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (‘LEED’) green building rating system.

LEED v4.1 is the next-generation standard for green building design, construction, operations, and performance.

A press release mentioned that as a part of its continuing sustainability initiative, GKNMH installed energy-efficient lighting in its facilities resulting in energy savings of more than 3 lakh units annually.

Existing VAM chillers at the hospital have been replaced with screw chillers, which has resulted in a total savings of more than 14 lakh liters of biodiesel. GKNM Hospital has a 250kW solar power plant installed on site, which generates nearly 1000 units per day.

In a ceremony held in the city, Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, Managing Director – Southeast Asia & Middle East, GBCI India handed over the LEED certificate to Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy, Chief Executive Officer of GKNM Hospital.
