Ahead of the 76th Republic Day celebrations, flag-makers in Raja Street, Coimbatore are engaged in making tricolored flags in bulk.

One of the flag-makers said that they are producing tricoloured flags hoping that they would get good orders this year from educational institutions, offices, trade unions, industry associations, etc.

The flag-maker said that during Republic Day, the flag-makers here usually receive more than 1 lakh orders whereas on Independence Day, they get almost 2 lakh orders. He added that they only use materials such as Khadi Fabric, Cotton, Velvet, Paper etc to make flags and do not consider using plastic.

Several years ago, the Ministry of Home Affairs had banned the use of plastic flags, instead cotton, polyester, wool, silk or khadi fabric could be used.

A copy of 'The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971' and 'Flag Code of India, 2002' which governs display of National Flag, are available on MHA's website. To know about it click here.
