The first phase of Coimbatore Western Bypass project works which began in August 2023 is now 58% over and the full completion of works in this phase will wrap up in August 2025, according to sources.

The 32.42 km long, four lane bypass which begins at Mayilkal/Madukkarai and ends at Narasimhanaickenpalayam, is designed to take the vehicles heading to Mettupalayam, Ooty and Mysuru from Kerala through it, thereby reducing the traffic snarls inside the city.

The first phase is from Madukkarai (Mayilkal) to Madhampatti (11.80 kms). The second phase, from Madhampatti to Kanuvai (12.10 kms) and third phase, from Kanuvai to Narasimhanaickenpalayam (8.52 kms).

With first phase expected to be over in August 2025, the state highways authorities will soon start the works for the second phase and float tenders for the same. A report mentions that an estimate of Rs. 340 crore has been prepared for this phase as it will also have 3 flyovers in it, coming up at Thondamuthur Junction, near Bharathiar University and at Pannimadai.

The estimate for the third phase works was prepared and has been sent for obtaining approval from the government. The authorities hope to finish the entire project in 2 years .
