In 2024, Coimbatore City registered 1,178 road accidents. More than 280 of them were fatal and 290+ lives were lost due to these accidents. Various studies state that over-speed and reckless driving are the reason for most road accidents.
Avinashi Road is one of the places where one can regularly see motorists, mostly the youth, drive rashly without worrying about themselves, the people ahead or the pedestrians. This is a usual scene not just in Avinashi Road, but in Mettupalayam Road and other major roads.
A few months ago, a group of youngsters even kept posting about their bike stunts on key roads including Race Course road. However, the number of such overspeeding and reckless driving incidents in the city is expected to decrease after the action taken by City Police on such folks made news.
The city police have warned that speed-monitoring systems have been installed in Avinashi Road, Sathy Road and Palakkad Road, and those who exceed the city's speed limit of 40 kmph in these roads will be slapped with fine automatically.
Recently, such action was taken against motorists who exceeded the speed limit. Most of them were college students and youngsters. The fine-related details were sent to them via SMS. Such actions are being taken more in the city with the help of speed-monitoring systems. The police have urged all motorists to keep their vehicle speed under 40 kmph.
