A garbage transfer station is a facility where waste collected through smaller vehicles like mini-trucks, pushcarts or battery-operated vehicles is temporarily stored. With the help of large vehicles, the wet waste is then sent to micro composting centres for processing while the segregated dry waste is sent to material recovery facilities.

While Coimbatore Corporation has 2 garbage transfer stations – in Ukkadam and Peelamedu (each with capacity to handle 200+ tonnes), the station on Sathy Road which remained non-functional for quite some time, is under renovation at Rs. 5.27 crore for quite a long time now.

The corporation started renovating it during March – April 2024. The work was originally scheduled for completion in September 2024. However it continues to go on even after the deadline.

“The delay in the arrival of essential containers was the reason for the setback. The containers have arrived now, and ramp construction is underway. We need to install the containers and build compound walls around the facility. This will be completed within two months,” The New Indian Express quoted an official. Once functional, this garbage transfer station could probably handle upto 150 tonnes of waste per day.
