The premier running event cum fundraiser in the city, the Coimbatore Marathon is returning for the 10th edition with a bang, as it will be held on December 11th in its usual physical format with 16,500+ registered people including runners from 18 states and UTs.
The marathon is organized by Coimbatore Cancer Foundation in association with Coimbatore Runners, and Showspace Events this year and it is recognized by Coimbatore District Athletic Association and Tamil Nadu Athletic Association.
The funds raised through this marathon will be used to support many activities of CCF like – Surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Investigations, Bed charges, Rehabilitation, Palliative care, Hospice and various outreach programs, awareness & screening projects.
Popular footwear brand Walkaroo is the title sponsor, and air compressor giant ELGi Equipments is powering up this event. The event comprises a Half Marathon -21.1 km and a 10 km. run and a 5 km run/walk with a total prize money amounting to Rs. 2.65 lakh.
85% of runners are from Covai while 250+ runners are from Kerala and 392 are from Tiruppur, the highest for an outside State and District. This year, 40 special children (mentally challenged) ready to run the 5 km stage. This year, the organizers have arranged for a Corporate Relay event in the marathon, to encourage corporates to take part. DGP of Tamil Nadu C.Sylendra Babu will be one of the persons to flag off the event, and he is expected to run this year with his team.
The T-Shirt and Medal launch and a Press conference was held on Tuesday at Brookfields Mall and it was attended by Dr. T. Balaji, Managing Trustee of the Coimbatore Cancer Foundation, V.K.C. Noushad, Managing Director, Walkaroo International Private Limited, Jairam Varadaraj, MD, ELGi Equipments and V.Balakrishnan IPS, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City.
The marathon begins at 5 a.m. at VOC park gate and proceeds to a scheduled route LIC Building Junction-KG Theater Cross-Race Course- Trichy Road Flyover (one side) and a U-Turn from there to - Sungam - Red Fields – Commissioner Bunglow – Race Course – KG and ends at Stanes School. It was conveyed at the event that the District Collector Dr.Sameeran and City Corporation Commissioner Pratap are expected to run.
1500 volunteers from CRPF, INS Agrani, Air Force Administrative College, Homeguards will be there. PSG Hospitals and GKNM Hospital will be available throughout the event to provide medical support. The youngest runners in the event include 10-year-olds and the oldest is a 90-year-old man.
A decade of organizing this event has helped to raise Rs. 2.75 crore (approx.) which has powered CCF to help many individuals affected by Cancer and other terminal diseases.
