While the approval for the Coimbatore Metro Train Project is yet to be granted by the Union Government, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has reportedly begun the preliminary works to acquire land for the project.

A report mentions that CMRL is in discussions with Tamil Nadu government officials regarding this. After evaluating the location of private and government-owned lands along the proposed routes, CMRL will proceed with acquiring the necessary land for the metro project here.

Meanwhile, changes have been planned for the design of several upcoming infrastructure projects in the city, keeping the Coimbatore Metro Train Project in mind.

The extended flyover from Goldwins to Neelambur has been planned as a double-decker structure instead of a single-level flyover. Similarly, the upcoming flyover at Saravanampatti is also planned as a double-decker flyover to accommodate metro on top and the regular traffic on the lower deck, according to sources.

In addition, a metro rail station is proposed at Ukkadam where a twin-bus stand project is set to take place after the DPR is approved by the TN government. Though the City Corporation has already set aside land in Ukkadam for the metro project to ensure smooth execution, it plans to consult with CMRL regarding the matter.

Since the metro project is closely linked to these infrastructure developments, early approval from the central government would help instill confidence among stakeholders and facilitate timely implementation.

It must be noted that while a few international funding agencies such as Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) have shown interest in financing the Coimbatore Metro Train Project, the Union Finance Ministry will make the final decision on which agency will be selected. The city awaits for a green light from the Centre.
