Mayor of Coimbatore City, Kalpana Anandakumar, the first woman mayor of the city, has resigned from the post citing health conditions as reason. She reportedly sent her resignation letter to the Corporation Commissioner through another person today evening.

Kalpana (42) won the urban local body elections from ward 19 in 2022. Her husband Anandakumar is DMK’s Maniyakarampalayam area committee member. Word spread that DMK high command gave her the Mayor post after a recommendation from former Minister Senthil Balaji. She was recently embroiled in several controversies, including allegations of corruption against her and her husband, according to The Hindu.

A source shared that Corporation Commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran had said that in accordance with Section 37 of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Act, 1981, a special Council meeting will be held on July 8 (Monday) for approval of Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar's resignation by the elected body. Additional charge will be decided then.
