Residents of Coimbatore may have to spend water very wisely as two of the major dams that meet the water requirements of Coimbatore city; Siruvani dam and Pillor dam, have not received abundant rainfall last monsoon, and their water levels are coming down slowly.

As per recent reports the water level in Siruvani dam is at 22 ft against its total capacity of 45 ft whereas Pillor dam’s water level is at 64 ft against 100 ft of total capacity. Summer heat is said to be one of the factors responsible for the decrease in the water level.

Prior to the intervention of Tamil Nadu Government, Kerala was giving 3.5 crore liters of water daily to Coimbatore via Siruvani Dam whereas after the government’s conversation with the head of God’s own country, the levels were increased to 5.5 crore liters per day.

Now, since the water level at the dam is at 22 ft, the daily released water quantity is 5 crore. Some parts of Coimbatore city are receiving drinking water once in 10-15 days.

Local weather expert, Santhosh Krishnan a.k.a Coimbatore Weatherman said earlier this week that summer rains are possible only during April – May. Hence betting on summer rains in March and spending water lavishly would not be a wise idea.

The first week of March this year is expected to face upto 35 °C and after that whole of March could experience temperature upto 36°C.  Hence, Coimbatore needs to conserve water as summer heat is only going to rise.
