Due to the decision of the family members of a 43-year-old woman who was declared brain-dead at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, five patients in different parts of Tamil Nadu have received a new lease on life.

Thangamani (43), a native of Tiruppur district, was en route to a temple in Coimbatore’s Anaimalai area on a two-wheeler when she lost control of the vehicle and suffered a severe head injury in the fall. She was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where doctors later declared her brain-dead.

With her family members agreeing to donate her organs, the procedures were carried out following the guidelines of TRANSTAN. Her liver, kidneys, and eyes were harvested for transplantation. The liver was sent to a private hospital in Coimbatore, while one kidney and both eyes were retained by Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The other kidney was sent to Salem Government Hospital.

In recognition of the family's selfless decision, hospital staff, led by Dean Dr. Nirmala, paid tribute to the organ donor. Thangamani’s body was later taken to Dharapuram for the final rites.
