The Bharatanatyam Arangetram (the debut) of P. Smrita, a student of Sangarabharanam Music Academy, Peelamedu, was held recently at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Auditorium.

The event was presided over by Subhashini, MD of Sangarabharanam Music Academy. Suguna Lakshminarayanaswamy, President of Suguna Institutions and Industries, participated as the Chief Guest, while Rama Kathiravan, Professor of Bharatanatyam at Annamalai University, served as the Guest of Honor.

Smrita has been learning the art from Guru Vanisri Kannadasan since the age of 6. Inspired by her father, Prem Anand, who is also a Bharatanatyam artist, Smrita learned the art with utmost devotion at Sangarabharanam Music Academy. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Bharatanatyam from Annamalai University while also doing her first year BBA (IB) at Kumaraguru College, Coimbatore.

During the Arangetram ceremony, she performed seven types of Bharatanatyam dances, including Pushpanjali, Kanda Alarippu, Murali Kauthuvam, Dasavathara Varnam, Venkatachala Nilayam, Padam, and Thillana. Upon her successful performance, the academy presented her with a certificate of Arangetram and the title ‘Nrithyavarshini’.

Sharing her aspirations, Smrita said that she wishes to pursue a Ph.D. in Bharatanatyam, and upon completing it, she plans to establish her own Bharatanatyam academy to teach the classical art to all those determined to learn it.
