At least 40 people die on Tamil Nadu’s roads every day and most of the victims of these incidents are bike-riding young motorists who violate traffic rules and exceed the speed limit.
A recent report states that nearly 43–45% of accidents in the State are caused by motorists who operate two-wheelers without following traffic regulations. According to sources, 18,347 people lost their lives in Tamil Nadu in 17,526 accidents in 2023. In the following year, 18,074 fatalities were recorded from 17,282 accidents.
Since a significant number of accident victims are youngsters and teenagers, the Coimbatore City Police - Traffic Wing has urged parents to avoid promising their children two-wheelers as a reward for scoring good marks in exams. Young riders, often driven by excitement and curiosity, tend to disregard traffic rules while driving bikes and this leads to accidents that create lifelong consequences. When young individuals become bedridden or permanently disabled due to road accidents, their future is left uncertain.
In 2024, Coimbatore city alone witnessed 1,178 accidents, including 288 fatal ones, resulting in 297 deaths and injuries to 992 people. The police have sincerely urged parents to educate their children about road safety and ensure they understand the importance of following traffic rules.
