The Coimbatore District Cyber Crime Police received 4,092 cybercrime-related complaints from victims in 2024 alone. The total amount lost by all the complainants amounts to Rs.39.30 crore.
Cybercrimes have evolved, with fraudsters impersonating police officers and threatening to arrest their targets by claiming that drugs and illegal substances are being sent as parcels in their name. They demand money, warning that failure to pay will result in arrest. The District Cyber Crime Police recently arrested one such fraudster involved in this crime and are working to apprehend his associates as well.
While the government, private entities, and police are taking steps to raise awareness, a report states that more than half of the cybercrime victims in Coimbatore were IT professionals and other well-educated individuals.
In the past year alone, over 4,000 cybercrime complaints were made in Coimbatore district. The police registered 150 FIRs, froze the bank accounts of 170 individuals involved in these crimes, and immobilized Rs.15.66 crore linked to them. The police have urged people to call the helpline number 1930 immediately if they fall victim to cybercrimes.
