Since 2024 January 1 to September 30, Coimbatore city lost 220 persons to road accidents. This is the exact number of persons who perished last year in the same period according to S. Ashok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Coimbatore City.
The number of deaths on road has neither decreased nor increased in the city. It must be mentioned that 34 persons died in the month of April 2024 alone.
On the one hand the police are working with Highways department and other concerned department to roll out various road safety measures like pelican signals and U-turns. But motorists continue to violate road safety rules and cause a threat to not just themeselves but others as well.
As per sources, the police slapped fines on 5,710 persons for over-speed, booked cases on 9,199 persons for skipping red light at signals, registered cases on 3,933 for using cellphone while driving, 4,422 for drunk & drive, slapped fine on 1,15,853 persons for not wearing helmet while driving and also took similar action on 42,043 pillion riders for the same violation. 2,734 car drivers driving without wearing seat belts were also fined.
220 persons died in road accidents in Coimbatore city from Jan to September 2024, exactly like 2023!
